The SAIC Purchase of Forterra is Good News

Today SAIC (Scientific Applications International Corporation, a scientific, engineering, and technology applications company with sales of US$10 Billion in 2009) announced its acquisition of Forterra Systems, creators of the OLIVE enterprise virtual world platform.

We will continue to distribute, support and build applications on the OLIVE platform for the European market with SAIC and are working with the same great business development professionals we were before.

While we were saddened by the departure of many outstanding Forterra employees we had the pleasure of working with, we believe the best prospects for growth of the OLIVE platform is with its new owners.

We're excited about the prospects of working with SAIC to continue to deliver outstanding enterprise virtual world applications. They have a significant engineering and program delivery track record which should help extend what we and customers can do with truly initeroperable virtual worlds.

Slides from my talk on Collaboration and Virtual Worlds

I presented an overview at the Serious Games Institute this week of the key drivers which I believe are fueling the renewed interest in collaboration tools and how virtual worlds provide a unique and powerful capability to provide a sense of copresence and better collaborative media sharing.

Here are the slides from my talk. I wished I had remembered to record it! Lots of good questions arose.

A minute on Enterprise Virtual Worlds

Nigel Paine (his blog and Twitter feed) and I were discussing how easy it has become to share knowledge in real time across the world using mobile social media tools... and he suggested we create a minute on virtual worlds which we did! He uploaded it via iPhone to an audio service and was then able to tweet it to his posse. I like this tool - it even geotagged our location automatically. Cool! Hopefully the audio plays on most phones too.

Serious Vitual Worlds Conference Video Archive Up

You can view the video and slide archive of the full conference (and the last two years) here (note you need latest java and win media plugins for Firefox, easier to use IE. Quicktime video is not live yet.

The abstracts and speaker bios are on the site as well as posted previously here.

It was a great day, lots of real world examples were shared across sectors.
I managed the technical aspects of streaming live into Forterra Systems OLIVE to try and help it be a more engaging experience with Paul Turner who did a great job facilitating. It worked really well but next year we will have to find a more distributed video streaming service for our overseas participants.

I gave a brief talk on Ambient work in progress to solve training scalability opportunities and new applications with artificial intelligence integration and better emotional display capabilities and interfaces (below).

Forterra OLIVE Virtual World Reviewed

Glenn Engstrand, President of Dynamical Software Inc., recently highlighted the value of virtual worlds for enterprise collaboration and price competitiveness of Forterra OLIVE in particular. He also favorably compared the user experience to Second Life as better for enterprise users - something I've been saying from the beginning!

It's great to have another independent voice articulate the benefits of using OLIVE for enterprise collaboration!

You can read his original blog posting on the Toolbox for IT Knowledge Management Community (looks very intersting!) here.

Forterra OLIVE Featured on TV Show NCIS - here it is!

Forterra Systems OLIVE virtual world platform was featured on episode 22 of NCIS a few months ago. We cant get the full episode yet here in the UK but I found this uploaded version (below).

At the very beginning you can see the camera zoom through OLIVE showing a California city which then morphs to a live view on the ground. The imagery is from Pictometry and was developed by Lockheed Martin, Forterra clients and developers.

Forterra are leading the pack when it comes to realistic terrain capabilities and have one of the ONLY geospatially accurate virtual worlds which enable these types of mirror world applications. It's great to see it in prime time!

If the clip below stutters, let it play for a bit to buffer with the audio off, then restart.

A better Mobile AR Video Demo

Our Mobile Augmented Reality Demonstrator

I recorded this video today of our mobile AR demonstrator as many people have been asking for it. I am getting a better video capture card to take the feed directly from the phone so the next version should be easier on the eyes and ears!

Current projects under development include brand marketing and cultural heritage. We've explored some interesting projects involving embedding AR images into optics for industrial and military apps but those are still in the idea stages.

Comments and project inquiries welcome!

New Study on ROI for Enterprise Virtual Worlds

Thinkbalm have just published a free report in which 66 people/organisations contributed.
More than half of the participants reported either data or 'feelings' of success and a similar amount plan to expand their virtual world efforts this year.

You can read the summary on their blog and download the report here: http://thinkbalm.com/2009/05/26/thinkbalm-publishes-business-value-study/:

There are many charts included in the 36 page report which I found to be well written and useful.

I found this one especially compelling with my PhD research interest in 3d collaborative visualization. It is shown as the next biggest application after training, events and meetings as shown below. Our clients are very interested in 3d collaborative visualization but are mostly only in the exploratory stages.

Back From CeBIT with some pics vids and news

I visited CeBIT last week in Hannover Germany to participate on a panel on Enterprise Virtual Worlds to represent Forterra Systems OLIVE. The panel was moderated by Steve Prentice of Gartner who did a good job of keeping it interesting. Some panels are a drag! We were part of the California Pavilion (Qwaq, Second Life and Forterra are all based in California) and I have to say it's the first time that I have given a talk with posters of Arnold Schwarzenegger all around (he opened CeBIT this year).

I took a few pictures of the trade show and put them on Flickr with some comments:

I was fascinated by the Microsoft Surface display used by T-Mobile where they had several connected to look like a koi pond. I loaded my first HD video to YouTube of it (try it in 'HQ'!)

Time to focus on employee development and engagement

I just read an article on McKinseys website (free registration required) discussing how during periods of job cuts, it's more important than ever to focus on employee development and engagement to ensure a positive company culture and performance, and that wise companies use these situations to redesign work to give people more responsibilities which can require more training and support. It argues that to stay competitive, companies should continue to invest in people and engagement programs rather than put a freeze on all activities.

Here's the conclusion:

Cost cutting during a downturn is often necessary to ensure a company’s current profitability and future competitiveness. Rather than freezing all hiring and employee-development programs, companies should use this period as an opportunity to upgrade talent and better engage existing staff. This means reinvesting a percentage of the capital liberated from cost cutting into, for example, selective recruiting and development programs and in efforts to safeguard the culture and to redesign jobs so that they are more engaging to the remaining employees.

I think our new Virtual Instructor Led Training V-ILT just announced which we're developing with Brey Leino BroadSkill couldn't come at a better time. Effective training delivered more efficiently and at lower cost.

Meanwhile, interest in using the Forterra OLIVE platform for collaboration to save travel costs, improve efficiency and engagement continues to outpace pure training applications so it will be interesting to see whats more popular in a year or so. (Disclosure: Ambient is Forterras European service provider).
